Colossians 4
God/Father
Jesus/Christ
Paul

4:7 Tychicus: A believer from the Roman province of Asia, which included Colossae (Acts 20:4). While Paul was imprisoned, Tychicus delivered his letters to several churches in southwest Asia Minor (Col 4:16; Eph 6:21–22).

4:9 Onesimus: A slave who accompanied Tychicus to Colossae. Onesimus apparently had run away from his owner, Philemon, who might have hosted the Colossian church in his home (Philemon 2). Paul seems to have met Onesimus while in prison and now was sending him back to Colossae to be reconciled to Philemon (Philemon 10, 12).

4:10 Aristarchus: A missionary companion from Thessalonica (Acts 20:4). He was with Paul in Ephesus and Jerusalem and during his voyage to Rome (Acts 19:29; 20:4; 27:2).

4:10 Mark the cousin of Barnabas: John Mark from Jerusalem (Acts 12:12).

4:11 Jesus who is called Justus: Nothing is known of this man.

4:12 Epaphras: A believer who likely planted the church at Colossae and perhaps also the churches at Laodicea and Hierapolis.

4:14 Luke, the doctor: A missionary companion of Paul (see Acts 16:10 and note; 2 Ti 4:11); traditionally identified as the author of the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts.

4:14 Demas: Although he was with Paul at the time of this letter, Demas later deserts Paul and goes to Thessalonica (2 Tim 4:10).

4:15 Nympha: Probably a wealthy single woman or a widow, since she hosted a church in her home. Members of the early church typically met in homes (e.g., Rom 16:5).

4:17 Archippus: Mentioned only in this verse and in Philemon 2, where he is included as part of Philemon’s household. Archippus likely served with Paul at some point.

1:1 Timothy: Paul names his associate Timothy as a co-sender, although the personal nature of this letter suggests that its content comes primarily from Paul. See note on 2 Cor 1:1.

1:1 Philemon: The owner of the slave Onesimus and host of the church at Colossae (Phlm 2). Philemon apparently became a believer through Paul’s ministry (v. 19). Although Paul refers to Philemon as a fellow worker, the nature of Philemon’s service is not clear; it does not seem that Paul visited Colossae (Col 2:1), so the two men must have met elsewhere (perhaps Ephesus).

1:2 Apphia our sister: Some manuscripts describe Apphia as “our sister,” identifying her as a believer; other manuscripts read “the beloved.” She might be Philemon’s wife, in which case Paul is addressing her because wives often managed household slaves in Graeco-Roman society (compare note on v. 10). Paul is calling on her—as well as Philemon—to receive Onesimus as a brother in Christ.

1:2 Archippus: Probably another member of Philemon’s household—perhaps his son. Archippus seems to have held some kind of ministry role at Colossae (Col 4:17 and note).

1:10 Onesimus: Philemon’s runaway slave. While he was on the run, Onesimus met Paul and became a believer (the details of their meeting are not mentioned).

1:23 Epaphras: A believer who likely planted the church at Colossae and perhaps also the churches at Laodicea and Hierapolis.

1:24 Mark the cousin of Barnabas: John Mark from Jerusalem (Acts 12:12).

1:24 Aristarchus: A missionary companion from Thessalonica (Acts 20:4). He was with Paul in Ephesus and Jerusalem and during his voyage to Rome (Acts 19:29; 20:4; 27:2).

1:24 Demas: Although he was with Paul at the time of this letter, Demas later deserts Paul and goes to Thessalonica (2 Tim 4:10).

1:24 Luke: A missionary companion of Paul (see Acts 16:10 and note; 2 Ti 4:11); traditionally identified as the author of the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts.
